Personal – Sugar Drops Fanzine
In 2005 – in the midst of the indie sleaze era, urban art was the coolest thing around and in my homeland – The Canary Islands – there was lots of cool artists but nothing much going on. Me and my friend Manuel Cabezudo started a fanzine we named Sugar Drops to showcase local artists and bring them together in little events and gatherings. We featured 2 artists in each issue.
We stenciled by hand 2000 covers for the first issue of the fanzine the night before a little launch party… It was a long night.
We just had lots of fun and invited friends and people we met in parties at the time to get featured in the zine. We quickly realised it was a tool to meet new cool people around us we had never even imagined that existed in our islands.
After a few issues, we started opening the zine to people from abroad. In this issue we invited one of our favourite studios at the time Vasava Artworks from Barcelona to design the cover.
We made 6 issues in the span of a year.
We featured Mark the Cobra Snake in one issue. He sent some random pics but we were happy to feature a pic of Cory Kennedy, the coolest human in the world at the time.
Carhartt, Franklin Marshall, Montana Colors and Vice magazine supported our zine by buying our backcover, sending us goodies and supporting us in our little events.
We did launch parties, live paintings, workshops and were invited to different events around the Canary Islands and in Madrid to showcase the fanzine and its artists. Everything was chaotic and 100% DIY.
It was a really nice time were we learned a lot and made lots of friends that we are still very close to. The project had some visibility and got featured in some books. Towards the end of the project we got a cultural grant from the goverment to keep going but we already were into other things and decided to end the project.
